2 Joseph's passing was noted in multiple Texas newspapers, reflecting his ties across the state. The obituary, as published in the Alvin Sun (Alvin, Tex.), Vol. 78, No. 32, Ed. 1, Thursday, March 6, 1969, Page 4, and similarly reported in the Wichita Falls Record News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram on February 21, 1969 read in part:

"Joseph Willis Spruill, 75, of Alvin died Friday, Feb. 21. He was a member of the Baptist Church in Oklaunion, Texas, and a member of the American Legion Post 320 in Chillicothe.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. H. A. Bohot of Alvin and Mrs. J. N. McClure of Oklaunion, Texas; three sons, Milton (V. M.) Spruill of Fort Worth, James W. Spruill of Tyler, and Lloyd (L. J.) Spruill of Azle; two sisters, Mrs. W. G. Bell of Vernon and Mrs. Ivy Mulkey of Abilene; one brother, Sam Spruill of Chillicothe; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren."
